Description: The ethical code of Torah gives important and necessary guidance to the evolving contemporary world. This series deals with these issues of ethics and morality through the examination of the following topics: Damages, guardians, truth and falsehood, misleading and deceiving, disclosure of secrets, and dissemination of information about other people. These issues are significant in our daily lives and through this series students will be able to deepen their understanding which will indelibly affect their whole life. In this course, students will be given source material and attempt to arrive at conclusions about practical ethical questions based on classic Torah and Talmudic sources.

Description:  This book of Mishnah records divine wisdom focussed on morals, values and ethics passed down through the ages via Rabbinic teachings. This class will focus on chapters 2–3 which details life lessons in honing our relationship with Hashem and our peers.

Description: This course aims to give students both an appreciation of the purpose and value of prayer, the format of our daily prayers as well as an in-depth analysis of specific daily Tefillot in our daily Siddur through the Amidah. This course also addresses philosophical issues in Tefilla such as the need to verbalize our prayers, the importance of a synagogue and the centrality and how to focus our minds with proper intent while praying.

Description:  This course studies Judaism’s core beliefs about G-d, the purpose of our lives, the meaning behind Mitzvot, the authenticity of the Torah and more. Given over in teenage friendly language, students will come out with the rationale for religious practice designed so that students can explain the “whys” behind Jewish practice and belief and be proud of their heritage.

Description: This course provides students with practical instruction regarding the laws of Kashrut, the dietary laws. Including the categories of kashrut, common kashrut concerns in the kitchen as well as exploring the world of industrial kashrut. Additionally, this course covers essential laws and customs of each chag occurring during the academic year.

Chumash Book of Bereishit

Description:  The Chumash is Hashem’s instruction to Bnai Yisrael about how to foster a relationship with Him and be successful in our life’s journey. This course’s focus will be on the formative stage of the development of the world from the creation narrative through the establishment of the Israelite family (Parshiot Bereishit until Parshat Vayishlach), the precursors of the Jewish nation. Students will cover both didactic narratives and glean valuable life lessons from these episodes, while gaining analytical skills from analysis of texts and commentaries. Students will also focus on the Parshah of the week each Friday gaining both an overview of the Parshah as well as practical lessons.

Navi Sefer Yehoshua

Description: The Book of Prophets is designed to teach us valuable, divine lessons from the period of Bnai Yisrael’s entry into the Holy Land until its settlement 14 years later. In this book, guided by Yehoshua, the Jewish People set an example for later generations in remaining steadfast in their faith, despite all odds. In this course, students will cover the Navi text and classic commentaries with a goal of gleaning life lessons from Hashem’s guidance through Jewish History. Additionally, students will cover selections from Megillot Esther and Rut.

Description:  This course gives students an overview of the meaning behind each stage of the Jewish lifecycle from birth to death. This will be a web-based course in which students will learn the customs and rationale behind the ceremonies of the life cycle. Students will also get opportunities to get a close up view of these events through project based learning and guest speakers.

Description:  In this course, students will glean from the wisdom of Talmudic sages through their debate, logic and interpretations of the Torah to arrive at legal conclusions applicable in our times. Students will get exposure to original Aramaic texts, focussing on the process of how the Rabbis arrived at Jewish law. Students will focus on sections dealing with holidays and civil law and will study in small groups called chavurot in which students will employ collaborative study to learn the topics with guided questions.

Description: By understanding the historical and philosophical underpinnings of the Torah Shebe’al peh/Oral Torah, students will learn how the Judaism we know developed from the mishnah and the Gemara through the modern period and truly emerged from the written law. This course seeks to provide the critical background that is often left unarticulated students will explore the richness of the tradition tracing the development of Torah through the eras and meeting the personalities who animated the that process they will enter into relationship with the Torah and those who have transmitted it.
